Though the little chestnut mare won 19 total races and about $35,000, it is her running babies that made Cherry Lake (TB) famous.
Cherry Lake (TB) produced 10 foals – 8 starters, 6 winners, 1 multiple world champion, 4 Grade 1 stakes winners, 7 Register of Merit earners and 2 track-record setters. Her most successful offspring was Cash Rate, a gelding by Dash For Cash that was named overall racing world champion in 1985 as a 5-year-old and champion aged horse and aged gelding in ’86.
Flow Of Cash, a 1982 Dash For Cash filly, placed third in the Kansas Futurity (G1) in ’84, then returned the next year to win the Kansas Derby (G1). Cherry Lake’s foal, Six Popper by Streakin Six, won the All American Derby (G1) in 1986. Countin The Cash, another product of the Dash – Cherry mating, also was a winner, setting the track record when he won the Peninsula Handicap at Bay Meadows.
All in all, Cherry Lake’s foals earned $1,853,952, ranking her as the fifth-leading dam of earners and the richest not represented by an All American Futurity winner.
Cherry Lake was foaled in Arizona in 1966. She was by Lake Erie, a son of 1937 Triple Crown winner War Admiral. For most of her producing years, she was owned by Texans Minnie Rhea Wood of Wichita Falls and B. F. Phillips Jr. of Frisco. Phillips took Cherry Lake as one of the 39 mares test-bred to Dash For Cash in his first season at stud.
Cherry Lake died July 1, 1993, just 16 days before the Phillips Ranch was to be dispersed. In 1998, she became the fifth Thoroughbred inducted into the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame and the first Thoroughbred mare.
