Colby James, a 5-year-old son of Jesse James Jr owned by Rex Wells and the 6-5 favorite, won Saturday's 440-yard, $100,000 Dona Ana County Stakes (R) for New Mexico-breds at Sunland Park.

Prepped by James Gonzales III and racing against a reported 20-mph head wind, Colby James covered his quarter-mile trip in :21.769 while defeating 10-1 longshot Marcus Medallion by a neck. Ricky Ramirez rode the sorrel gelding.

Colby James was bred by Mac and Janis Murray's MJ Farms at Veguita, New Mexico, and he was purchased by Wells for $15,000 at the 2018 New Mexico-Bred Sale at Ruidoso Downs. The gelding is out of Sandy June Bug, an unraced daughter of the Bugs Alive In 75 stallion Blushing Bug. His second dam, the winning Dash Ta Fame mare Sandys Fame, ran second in the 1997 Diamond Classic Futurity (RG1) at the Central Wyoming Fair.

Colby James was stretching out in distance off of his half-length victory in the January 8, 400-yard Red Or Green Stakes (RG1) at Sunland Park. All told, he has won eight of 20 starts -- including three of four at Sunland Park -- and the $60,000 winner's share of the purse from his fourth career stakes score pushed his earnings to $550,168.

Bigg Dee ran third and was followed by Fly On Down, Cartel Drunk Playboy, Perrys Regard, Don Chuy C, Woodys Gold, Effortless Candy Cat, and Spiritonthemountain.
