Ed Allred

Ed Allred was always a horse racing fan.  But he never imagined he would own the American Quarter Horse racing capital of the world.

It was 1956, and the young law student was reading the Daily Racing Form when he noticed the Allred Brothers were running Quarter Horses at Los Alamitos.  Although no relation to the brothers, Ed was hooked on Quarter Horse racing.

From time to time, Allred would go to the track with his friend, Tom Seibly.  With only the vaguest idea of what a Quarter Horse race was, Allred loved the sport from the start.

A few years later, Allred saved enough money to buy a horse.  The law student turned medical student’s first horse was Beowawe.  He also partnered on a mare named Punch Time.

Through the years, Allred has been connected with Charger Bar and Elans Special.  A student of pedigrees, Allred breeds and raises top Quarter Horses at his Rolling A Ranch in Atascadero, California.  The breeder has won AQHA’s champion breeder title nine times and the champion owner award six times.  He raised Separatist, Make It Anywhere, Way Maker and Making Ways.

Allred also entered the world of track management.  He was a board member of the Pacific Coast Quarter Horse Racing Association and later joined the Horsemen’s Quarter Horse Racing Association.  In 1990, with the help of close friend R. D. Hubbard, Allred purchased one-half interest in Los Alamitos Race Course.  Eight years later, Allred was sole owner of the track.

The breeder and racehorse enthusiast was inducted into the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame in 2006.
