Mr Jess Perry

Mr Jess Perry, the sorrel son of Streakin La Jolla, became a track record-setting winner in Texas, a champion in the world, and ended up as one of the very best sires in the long history of the fastest horses on earth.

Mr Jess Perry was bred by Jesse Perry of Alexandria, Louisiana, whose son Leverne Perry was then the executive director of the Louisiana Quarter Horse Breeders Association.        

Mr Jess Perry was one of six winners from seven starters out of the winning Sinn Fein mare Scoopie Fein, who produced the earners of $837,511. Because of his position with LQHBA, Leverne thought it inappropriate to race Mr Jess Perry. The colt was sold at the 1993 LQHBA Yearling Sale, where he was purchased for $15,500 by Elliot Clark Sr. of Lake Charles, Louisiana.

In April 1994, the colt was acquired by Cheryl Brasseaux, whose husband, John, trained him to win seven of nine races and run second twice that season. Mr Jess Perry earned $519,430 as a 2-year-old – the second-richest horse of the year, behind only All American Futurity winner Noblesse Six.

The LQHBA horse of the year in 1994, Mr Jess Perry finished his freshman season as American Quarter Horse racing’s champion 2-year-old and champion 2-year-old colt, making him Louisiana’s first official state-bred to win a racing championship.

Trained at 3 by Brasseaux and Kenneth Roberts, Mr Jess Perry ran in the name of Diedre Watson to win the Texas Classic Derby and three other of eight races. Ridden throughout his career by Trevino Clark Sr. and Ray Migues, Mr Jess Perry retired with $687,184 in earnings.

Between his freshman and sophomore seasons on the track, Mr Jess Perry began his career at stud on Rick and Brad Boutte’s Pleasure Time Farm at Alexandria, Louisiana. In 1999, the stallion arrived at the Four Sixes, where he stood for the rest of his life. From 20 crops to race and 1,399 starters, Mr Jess Perry has sired 882 winners, including 2010 All American Futurity winner Mr Piloto, 143 other stakes winners and 156 stakes-placed runners.

Mr Jess Perry has sired the earners of more than $53.9 million, making him, First Down Dash and Corona Cartel the only three stallions to be represented by the earners of more than $50 million.

Mr Jess Perry also is the all-time third leading broodmare sire of money earners. The stallion’s daughters have produced such sprinters as world champions Heza Dasha Fire and Jessies First Down, champions and All American winners Handsome Jack Flash and Jess Good Candy, and other champions such as All American Derby winner EC Jet and Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity winner Ima Fearless Hero.

Due to complications of age and laminitis, Mr Jess Perry was euthanized November 15, 2017. The stallion was buried on the Four Sixes Ranch beside Streakin Six, Special Effort and Ocean Runaway.

Mr Jess Perry was inducted into the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame in 2019.
