Los Alamitos
Sent to post as the 9-10 favorite in a field of nine sophomores, Reliance Ranches' Unrelentless scored a three-quarter length victory in Saturday's $30,000 Town Policy Stakes.
Unrelentless covered 400 yards in :20.002. Justine Klaiber rode the Oklahoma-bred son of champion Hes Relentless for trainer Eddie D. Willis.
"He broke a little slow and it was a little tight, but he prevailed and finished really strong," said Klaiber of Unrelentless' trip. "He just powered through."
Unrelentless was purchased from breeder Flag Ranch for $200,000 at the 2022 Heritage Place Yearling Sale, and he was shortening in distance off of his fifth-place finish in the September 2, 440-yard All American Invitational Stakes at Albuquerque Downs. The bay colt is out of Painted Wine Wagon, a homebred PYC Paint Your Wagon mare who won the 2017 Oklahoma Horsemen's Association Mystery Futurity (RG3) at Will Rogers Downs.
Campaigned in three states, including New Mexico and Oklahoma, Unrelentless has won four of his 14 races, and the $16,500 winner's share of the purse from his first stakes victory increased his earnings to $333,477. His record includes a second-place finish in last year's Grade 1, 400-yard Golden State Million Futurity at this track.
Also on Saturday, Henry Lopez rode odds-on favorite Rockin With Energy to a 1 1/2-length win in the 350-yard, $30,000 Justanold Love Stakes for 3-year-old fillies.
Trained by Paul Jones for the Parsons Family Limited Partnership, Rockin With Energy stopped the timer in :17.481. The homebred daughter of the First Down Dash stallion Parsons Rock earned a 98 speed index while banking $16,500 from her second lifetime stakes victory.
"She got a really nice break tonight," said Jones. "She's just full of talent and has a lot of run to her. She's always been one of my favorites."
Rockin With Energy was bred in California. The sorrel filly is out of Terrific Energy, a multiple graded stakes winning Mr Jess Perry mare.
Rockin With Energy has won five of her 12 outs and has earned $209,223. The filly's resume includes a second-place finish in last year's Grade 1, 350-yard Ed Burke Million Futurity, and she was a finalist in this year's Los Alamitos Winter (G1) and Golden State (G2) derbies.
