Dr. Ed Allred’s Monopolist rolls on this year in stakes races and brings an impressive lineage into the $122,000 PCQHRA Breeders’ Derby (G3) on October 2 at Los Alamitos.

The James Glenn Jr.-trained Monopolist has made five 2021 starts and posted three trial wins, a second in the $175,000 Governor’s Cup Derby (G2) and a third in the $203,950 Los Alamitos Winter Derby (G1).

The Breeders’ Derby is part of a busy weekend at the California track, with the $375,000 PCQHRA Breeders’ Futurity (G2) and the Los Alamitos Equine Sale also on the card.

Monopolist was sensational in the Breeders’ Derby trial. The 3-year-old gelding went off as the 1-5 favorite and looked like a strong favorite. He easily cruised away from his rivals to win by 1 1/2 lengths, with the fastest qualifying time of :19.633 for the 400 yards.

In the Governor’s Cup Derby, he was the 1-2 favorite. He got a solid start and raced near the lead before finishing second, beaten by a nose.

In the Winter Derby, he went off as the 27-10 second choice and finished behind $678,253 Rainbow Derby (G1) finalist Flash Bak and $929,465 All American Derby (G1) third-place finisher Candy Blood.

As a 2-year-old, Monopolist won the $375,000 PCQHRA Breeders Futurity (G2) and the $25,000 Freshman Stakes. He qualified for the $1,977,250 Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity (G1).

Monopolist is a son of leading sire Favorite Cartel, who is a force with earners of $25 million, about 80 stakes winners and three champions.

The female family goes back to fifth dam Elan Again, the 1975 champion aged mare. The Jet Deck daughter won the Vessels Maturity, the Go Man Go Handicap, the HQHRA Championship, Pomona Championship, a division of the Miss Princess Handicap, the Las Damas Handicap and the Bart Express.

Elan Again then gained success as a broodmare. She produced Kindergarten winner Dash Again, the fourth dam of Monopolist. Also she is the dam of stakes winner and multiple Grade 1 stakes-placed Reach Together and Jet Deck Handicap winner Special Elan. This is the immediate family of All About Ease, out of Dash Again’s daughter Effortless Again. All About Ease won the Rainbow Futurity and produced Rainbow Futurity (G1) winner Zoomin With Ease, Texas Classic Futurity (G1) runner-up Algorithmic and Kindergarten winner All N The Jeans.

Monopolist’s third dam Elans Special, by Special Effort, won the All American Futurity (G1) and the Miss Princess Handicap (RG2). She is the dam of California Sires’ Cup Futurity (RG2) winner Gotothemountain and the second dam of two-time champion Catchmeinyourdreams.

Monopolist’s second dam Elans Last, by Separatist, produced Ed Burke Million Futurity (G1) winner Chance To Excel, California Sprint Stakes winner Chance To Fire and Pacifica Handicap winner Chance It Now.

Monopolist’s dam, Nymph, a daughter of Foose, has produced only four foals of racing age. In addition to Monopolist, she is the dam of Los Alamitos Winter Derby finalist Gentleman Chuck, a full brother to Monopolist.

The future should bring continued success for Monopolist with his breeding built on a strong foundation that continues to produce.
