The first night of the Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale featured a new sale price record for a racing American Quarter Horse yearling sold at public auction, as First Texas Flash brought a final price of $800,000.

This breaks a 20-year old record set by Corona Caliente who sold for $700,000 at the 2001 Vessels-Schvaneveldt Yearling Sale at Bonsall, California.

First Texas Flash was consigned by Julianna Hawn Holt and purchased by West Texas Racing Partnership.

First Texas Flash is a brown colt sired by champion First Moonflash and out of champion Stylish Jess BR, who is sired by Feature Mr Jess. He is a full brother to millionaire and champion Flash And Roll.

The late First Moonflash has sired the earners of more than $21 million, including All American Futurity (G1) winner Handsome Jack Flash and champion Foxy Moonflash.

Stylish Jess BR was herself a champion and is the dam of eight foals to race and four winners, including Flash And Roll.

Among the West Texas Racing Partners are Joe Dee and Melanie Brooks and Scott and Jamie Bryant, although there are additional partners. Scott Bryant bought Flash And Roll as a yearling and campaigned her before selling her back to her breeder Julianna Hawn Holt when the mare retired.

A total of 163 yearlings went through the ring with 140 selling for a record $8,560,500, a 52 percent percent increase from last year when 154 of 177 sold for $7,112,500.

"We’ve never had a first night session of our sale come close in comparison to this record," All American Ruidoso Horse Sale Company General Manager Lowell Neumayer said late Friday.

Three yearlings brought a final bid of $220,000. Among them were Hip 66 Miami Bound (KVN Corona-Budder Think Twice by First Down Dash), who was consigned by Lazy E Ranch LLC agent for McColee Land & Livestock LLC and purchased by Tacho Cavazos; Hip 133 Sassy Dynasty (FDD Dynasty-Jess Sass Me by Mr Jess Perry), consigned by Lazy E Ranch LLC agent for Speed LLC and purchased by Blane Wood; and Hip 155, Valiant Livy (Valiant Hero-Jess Sass Me by Mr Jess Perry), who was consigned by Lazy E Ranch LLC agent for Speed LLC and purchased by Canadian River QH.

"Thank you very much to everyone that attended," Neumayer said. "We have another outstanding book for our second session on Saturday that gets underway shortly after the last race at Ruidoso Downs."

Session 2 will begin following the last race at Ruidoso Downs, and will offer hips 181-312. The third and final session is Sunday night following the races, and features hips 313-443.
