Funeral services were held Friday, August 20, 2021, at a 2 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial in St. John Berchmans Catholic Church in Cankton, Louisiana, for Shelton Joseph Dubois, age 77, who passed away Tuesday, August 17, 2021, at Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center in Lafayette, Louisiana.
Musical selections were provided by Valerie Andrus. The songs were On Eagle’s Wings, Amazing Grace, Be Not Afraid, Shepherd Me Oh Lord, Our Father, and Ave Maria.
Mr. Dubois was born March 8, 1944, and was a native and lifelong resident of Kaplan, Louisiana, having been a parishioner of St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church in Abbeville and also the Little Chapel in Gueydan.
Shelton had a passion for the sport of rodeo and spent countless hours working as a rodeo contractor and ran a large cattle ranch and cutting horse facility. Devoted as he was, he was a member of the American Quarter Horse Association, Louisiana Cattleman Association, and the National Cutting Horse Association.
Shelton started a legacy for his family through this sport and it will continue on, always in their hearts.
Survivors include two sons, Shel Dubois and his wife, Jeanne, of Cankton, and Jude Dubois and his wife, Nikki, of Houston, Texas; and seven grandchildren, Luke, Grace, Faith, John David, Gabe, Clay and Elle.
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Mary Dubois; his parents, Avery Dubois and the former Velta Broussard; and one sister, Elwanda Dubois Breaux.
A rosary was prayed at 11 a.m. Friday in the funeral home. Pallbearers were Shel Dubois, Jude Dubois, Luke Dubois, John David Dubois, Gabe Dubois, Josh Adams and Troy Noel.
Melancon Funeral Home of Carencro, 4615 North University Avenue, 337-896-6366, was in charge of arrangements.
