Gus Scroggins played many roles for AQHA: organizer, founder, judge and inspector.
During the 1940 meeting held in Fort Worth, Texas, Scroggins bought 10 shares of AQHA stock, and had four horses registered on Jim Minnick’s first inspection trip. Over the years, Scroggins became an inspector and judge for the Association. In 1955, he became an AQHA Director and served as an honorary vice president from 1971 until 1987.
Scroggins started breeding horses as a hobby that eventually turned into a successful enterprise. He bred and owned several outstanding horses. One of his better-known horses was the stallion Scroggins Littlestar by Lone Star.
Texas A&M University invited Scroggins on different occasions to speak to its students about the American Quarter Horse.
He was a supporter of youth programs and assisted with the first FFA horse show in Katy, Texas.
Scroggins gave many of his Quarter Horse foals to FFA members as far away as Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Among the different youth and AQHA activities, Scroggins was involved in establishing the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Quarter Horse show.
Scroggins died in 1987. The next year he was inducted into the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame.
