June 7-11 Stakes Recap

Following is a recap of all official American Quarter Horse stakes for the week of June 7-11. For recaps of most graded stakes, Bank of America Racing Challenge stakes and trials, and most stakes with purses of $100,000 or more, see the individual recaps in the Racing News section. This page will be updated throughout the week.

Canterbury Park
A 16-1 longshot in a field of five Minnesota-bred 3-year-olds, Corey Wilmes' EOS Whiskey Girl scored an upset victory in Wednesday's 400-yard, $22,000 North Star State Derby (R).

EOS Whiskey Girl defeated 2-5 favorite Beep Beep Rev Rev by a clear 2 1/4 lengths while stopping the timer in :19.793. Angel Ramirez rode the homebred Apollitical Jess filly for trainer Ed Hardy.

“I did not see that coming,” Wilmes said of EOS Whiskey Girl's win. “Honestly, I thought she’d probably get left in the gate and get stuck behind them. When she left, I was like, 'Game on.'"

EOS Whiskey Girl was making the second start of her sophomore season. Raced in two states, including Oklahoma, the filly has won two of five starts, and the $11,647 winner's share of the purse from her first career stakes score pushed her earnings to $28,512.

Also on Wednesday, Summer Run Inc.'s Sugar Rushh sprinted to a three-quarter length victory in the $23,400 North Star State Futurity (R) for state-bred juveniles.

Prepped by Jason Olmstead and sent to post as the 7-2 second choice in the field of eight, Sugar Rushh went 300 yards in :15.684. Armando Alvidrez rode the son of One Fabulous Eagle.

Sugar Rushh was bred by Darling Farms. The gelding is out of Candy Coated Paint, an unplaced 10-year-old PYC Paint Your Wagon mare. His second dam, the winning First Down Dash mare Sweet Candy Rose, ran second in the 1997 Heritage Place Futurity (G1) at Remington Park and third in that season's Grade 1 Texas Classic and Remington Park futurities.

Sugar Rushh was winning for the first time in two outs and boosting her bankroll to $12,318.

Century Mile
On Friday, the field was set for the June 24, $36,975 Sale Stakes Futurity (R) for 2-year-olds who passed through last year's AQHRA Canada Cup Yearling Sale ring.

Bitterroots Wagon, the fastest qualifier, won the first of two 300-yard trials by one length in :15.906. O. Amador Hernandez rode the brown son of the PYC Paint Your Wagon stallion JD Wagon Boss for owners Glenn K. Wills and Buckey Stockwell, who also trains the gelding.

Bitterroots Wagon was bred in Alberta by Glenn Wills, and he was making his career debut. The gelding is out of Bitterroot Corona, a homebred winning and multiple stakes placed 11-year-old daughter of the Fishers Dash stallion Sizzlin Red Corona.

Professor Gee, a California-bred son of Fly Thru The Fire racing for Jerry Stojan and Kevin Lyons, cruised to a 1 3/4-length victory in Sunday's $15,980 All Canadian Derby.

Ridden by J.B. Botello for trainer William Leech, Professor Gee covered 300 yards in :15.649. The sorrel gelding earned a 95 speed index and $8,422 from his first lifetime stakes win.

Professor Gee was making his sophomore season debut. The gelding was bred by Dr. Ed Allred, and he was purchased as a yearling by Stojan for $11,000 at the 2021 Los Alamitos Equine Sale.

Professor Gee ended his juvenile campaign with a second-place finish, one length behind winner Noble Rearing, in the October 8, $59,607 Canada Cup Futurity (RG3) at this track. All told, the gelding has won three of seven outs and has banked $28,757.

Chippewa Downs
Redoinit, a gelded son of the Corona Cartel stallion Ima Ramblin on owned and trained by Steve Leonard, is the fastest qualifier to the June 24, $18,000-est. Chippewa Downs North Dakota-Bred Derby (R).

On Sunday, Redoinit won the second of two 350-yard trials by a half of a length in :18.520. Larren Delorme rode the sorrel gelding.

Redoinit was bred by Randy and Sharlene Reuer. Raced in three states, including Minnesota, he has won four of nine starts -- including last year's North Dakota QHRA Futurity (R) at the North Dakota Horse Park -- and he has banked $22,142.

Delta Downs
Making the second start of her 5-year-old season, Gilbert Matthews' Sarahs Patriot broke sharply and drove to a neck victory in Saturday's 870-yard, $35,000 Virgil Bond Stakes.

Sarahs Patriot tripped the timer in :47.145 on a track listed as fast and sealed. Benito Baca rode the bay daughter of the Chicks Beduino stallion Game Patriot for trainer Phillip Calais Jr.

Sarahs Patriot was bred in Louisiana by Perform Stables Inc. Raced exclusively in Louisiana, the mare has won five of 20 outs, and the $21,000 winner's share of the purse from her second lifetime stakes score bumped her earnings to $132,223. Her four wins in eight starts at the 870 distance include last year's Virgil Bond.

Energy Downs
Broken Heart Ranch's BHR The Bomb Dot Com is the fastest qualifier to the June 21, $20,000-added Gillette Open Derby.

Racing in the second of two trials on Friday, BHR The Bomb Dot Com defeated seventh-fastest qualifier Baby I Du by two lengths while covering 350 yards in :17.488. Kody Kellenberger rode the homebred daughter of the One Famous Eagle stallion One Mean Eagle for trainer Robert Johnson.

BHR The Bomb Dot Com was bred in South Dakota. Raced in four states, the gray filly has won three of nine starts -- including last year's 1889 Futurity (R) for North Dakota- and South Dakota-breds at Canterbury Park -- and she has earned $20,558.

Los Alamitos
Famous Shining Star was successful in her first start since New Year's Day, as the 5-year-old One Famous Eagle mare won Sunday's $25,000 Check Her Twice Stakes for distaffers.

Prepped by Jose Flores for owner Johnny Trotter, Famous Shining Star led at every call en route to a neck victory from Budder Off Friends. Erasmo Gasca rode the mare, who covered 350 yards in :17.532 while earning a 96 speed index and the $13,750 winner's share of the purse from her fourth stakes victory.

Famous Shining Star was bred in Texas by Julianna Hawn Holt, and she was purchased by Trotter and Stan Sigman for $250,000 at the 2019 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale. The mare is out of Thewayouwantmetoo, a daughter of the Dash For Cash stallion Mr Eye Opener who won the '04 Rainbow Futurity (G1) at Ruidoso Downs.

Famous Shining Star has won seven of 19 races, including this year's Charger Bar Handicap (G1) at this track, and she has banked $163,653.

Ruidoso Downs
Sent to post as the 3-1 second choice in a full field of 10 3-year-olds, Valeriano Racing Stables' Sicario V won Saturday's $100,000 Ruidoso Invitational Stakes.

Sicario V RGwent 400 yards in :19.850 while racing against a reported 11-mph head wind, and his margin of victory was a neck from 13-10 favorite Chasing AJ. Francisco Calderon rode the gray son of Favorite Cartel for trainer Santos Carrizales Jr.

Sicario V was coming off of a victory in the last of 10 Ruidoso Derby (G1) trials on May 28. The gelding was bred in California by Ed Allred, and he was purchased as a yearling by Valeriano Racing Stables for $240,000 at the 2021 Los Alamitos Equine Sale.

Sicario V is out of Nymph, a multiple stakes winning homebred daughter of champion Foose, and he is a half brother to stakes winner and 2022 Mildred N. Vessels Memorial Handicap (G1) runner-up Nymphette. Raced in New Mexico and California, the gelding has won two of eight starts and has earned $512,485, and he was the runner-up in last year's 440-yard, $3-million All American Futurity (G1) at this track.

On Sunday, Raul Valenzuela rode 9-1 longshot Yippee Ki Yey to a neck victory in the $100,000 Ruidoso Juvenile Invitational Stakes for 2-year-olds.

Racing against a reported 7-mph head wind, Yippee Ki Yey went 350 yards in :17.803. Cody Noel saddled the homebred son of champion Tres Seis for owner Stanley Forbes.

Yippee Ki Yey was bred in Texas, and he made his debut with a neck win in the seventh of 16 Ruidoso Futurity (G1) trials on May 27, the first of two days of trials. The colt is out of Jess Shantastic, a homebred winning and multiple stakes placed 8-year-old daughter of the Corona Cartel stallion Fantastic Corona Jr.

The $42,967 winner's share of the purse increased Yippee Ki Yey's bankroll to $48,967 from two outs.

Wyoming Downs
BDS Performance Horses' Kcross Cuatro on Sunday recorded the fastest qualifying time to the June 25, $17,000-added K.C. Carden Wyoming-Bred Derby (R) for state-bred 3-year-olds.

Ridden by Nakia Teeter, Kcross Cuatro won the first of three trials by a neck while going 350 yards in :17.839. Skyler Greene trained the gelded son of the First Down Dash stallion RGR Jungle Jock.

Kcross Cuatro was bred by Wagonhammer Ranch. Campaigned exclusively in Wyoming, the gelding has won three of 11 races and has earned $29,929.

Also at this track on Sunday, Robert Harrison's Pattys Saint made her 5-year-old season debut with a wire-to-wire win in the 300-yard, $15,000 Governor's Cup Handicap.

Racing against a reported 25-mph head wind, Pattys Saint defeated Pappajeto by 1 1/4 lengths in :15.285. Jesus Virgen rode the homebred daughter of Jess Got Easier for trainer Heath Hillman.

Pattys Saint was bred in Idaho, and she was making her first start since December 10, when she ran seventh, four lengths behind winner and eventual world champion Empressum, in the sport's richest and most prestigious race for older runners, the 440-yard, $750,000 Champion of Champions (G1) at Los Alamitos. All told, the mare has won 14 of 21 races and has earned $230,331, and her eight career stakes victories include the 2021 AQHA Distaff Challenge Championship (G1) at Albuquerque Downs, and last year's Mildred N. Vessels Memorial Handicap (G1) at Los Alamitos.
