A Montana native, Karen Boylan draws inspiration from her experience as a rancher and raising Quarter Horses to create the detailed paintings that have brought her recognition through numerous awards. Boylan recognizes the importance of painting familiar subjects and tries to capture the beauty, hard work, and reality of ranch life and the horse. Collectors have come to appreciate the insight and intimate knowledge she has for her subjects.
For over 40 years, Boyland and her husband have ranched in the Beartooth Mountains of Red Lodge, Montana, and the Gallatin Valley outside of Bozeman, Montana, where they still raise Black Angus cattle today.
Attention to detail is the most important aspect of Boylan’s work. She strives for accuracy in anatomy of the animals as well as their personality and unique behavior. Karen enjoys the physical challenge of ranching, but also likes the mental aspect of capturing the awe and intensity of this life through her paintings.
