California Breeders' Champions weekend at Los Alamitos concludes with three state-bred stakes on Sunday.

The eight-race program, headed by the 400-yard, $185,000 Governor's Cup Derby (RG3) and 400-yard, $100,000 Spencer Childers California Breeders' Championship (RG1), gets underway at approximately 7:30 p.m. (PDT).

Fastest qualifier Nomadic, 2019 Golden State Million Futurity (G1) winner Runforyourlife, and Los Alamitos Two-Million Futurity (G1) runner-up Cattail Cove are among the 10 sophomores entered back in the Governor's Cup Derby.   Trained by Scott Willoughby for owner Ed Allred, Nomadic is coming off of a three-quarter length victory in his trial, which included Runforyourlife and Cattail Cove.

Nomadic was also the fastest qualifier to last year's Los Alamitos Two-Million Futurity, California's richest horse race.

“When he posted the fastest time to the Two Million last year, I honestly did not think anybody could beat him (in the final),” Willoughby said. “Obviously, there were some great horses in the Two Million final. He just didn’t get away from the gate in the Two Million as well as he usually does. It cost him the race.”

Link Newcomb’s Cattail Cove stumbled at the start of his sophomore debut when he finished sixth in the June 28 Vandy’s Flash Handicap. The Favorite Cartel gelding is trained by Juan Aleman, and he has earned $373,457 from nine outs, all at Los Alamitos.

Runforyourlife is trained by Chris O'Dell for owner Rosenthal Ranch LLC. The Favorite Cartel gelding has won five of 11 starts and has banked $584,803.

Chocolatito is the early favorite in the Spencer Childers. Scott Willoughby trains the homebred 4-year-old Favorite Cartel gelding for owner Ed Allred.

Raced exclusively at Los Alamitos, Chocolatito has won eight of 16 starts and has earned $176,203. He has won two graded stakes this year, including the July 5, 400-yard Vessels Maturity (G1).

Chocolatito drew the rail post and will be ridden by Vinnie Bednar.

The other stakes on the card, the 350-yard, $25,000 California Breeders' Debutante Stakes (R), has drawn a field of eight California-bred 3-year-old fillies.
