Richard “Dick” Pieper passed away Sunday, May 15, 2022 in Crowell, Texas. A graveside service is planned for 10 a.m., Thursday, May 19, at the Circle Bar Ranch Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5-6 p.m., Wednesday afternoon, at Smith Funeral Home in Crowell.

Richard Dale Pieper was born May 20, 1939, in Portsmouth, Ohio, to John Dale and Mary Ruth Bechtel Pieper. He was raised in Henley, Ohio, and started training horses at the age of 13 at the Pieper Farm. He served in the U.S. Navy, later coming to Crowell where he was a horse trainer at the Circle Bar Ranch.  He campaigned and stood world champion Texas Kicker and owned and stood legendary stallion Playgun. He is a member of the National Reining Horse Association Hall of Fame. He was a member of the Gilliland Baptist Church.

Survivors include a grandson, Zak Pieper; four nieces and one nephew; many great nieces and nephews; and several step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Matthew Bradney Pieper; and two brothers, Johnny Bryan and James Milton Pieper.
