Colby James wins the 2021 Jimmy Drake stakes

Mario Delgado rode Colby James to a wire-to-wire victory in Sunday's $48,500 Jimmy Drake Stakes (RG3) for New Mexico-breds at SunRay Park.

Racing against a reported 14-mph head wind, Colby James went 400 yards in :19.267. James Gonzales II prepped the 4-year-old son of Jesse James Jr for owner Rex Wells.

Colby James earned the $30,000 winner's share of the purse and a 112 speed index. The sorrel gelding was bred by Mac and Janis Murray's MJ Farms at Veguita, New Mexico, and he was purchased by Wells for as a yearling for $15,000 at the 2018 New Mexico-Bred Sale at Ruidoso Downs.

Colby James was coming off of a third-place finish in a 350-yard second-level allowance/optional claiming ($20,000) dash at Remington Park on April 8. The gelding has won six of 13 races, including three of eight at the 400-yard distance, and the winner's share of the purse from his second career stakes score increased his bankroll to $400,495, of which $328,955 was banked from six outs during his 2-year-old campaign.

Wahene Version finished second, a half of a length behind Colby James. Burn One Down For Me, Marcus Medallion, Girl With A Plan, Wisho, and Cartel Drunk Playboy completed the order of finish.
