In other Louisiana Downs news, Tuckers Prize, a 7-year-old gelded son of Fast Prize Dash owned and trained by Preston Jourdan, earned his 15th win in a 300-yard, $14,000 open-condition allowance dash for state-breds on January 21.
Tuckers Prize came to Jourdan from his friend, breeder Kirby Bruchhaus. Tuckers Prize did not meet his reserve bid in the 2017 LQHBA Yearling Sale, so Jourdan got a call from Bruchhaus asking if he would like the brown gelding.
“I sent my son to pick him up,” recalled Jourdan. “He called me and said ‘Dad, I think you’re going to like this one.’ We broke him and he won his (career debut) on May 5, 2018 at Delta Downs.”
Jourdan admits that he had no idea that Tuckers Prize would go on to win as many races as he has, including the 2019 Louisiana Champions Day Derby (RG3) at Fair Grounds Racecourse in New Orleans.
“He’s a very sound horse and really likes his job,” Jourdan said.
Raced exclusively in Louisiana, Tuckers Prize has earned $294,545 from 43 starts. He is scheduled to make his next start in the $25,000 Mr Jess Perry Stakes on February 11.
“This horse has been a blessing to us,” said Jourdan. “Everyone loves him; he’s had the same groom since he began his career, and he is always game. It’s hard to ask for anything more."
