Stewards for Trails, Education & Partnerships is a program designed by the American Quarter Horse Association to encourage good stewardship and conservation of riding trails.

STEP’s mission is to promote equestrian involvement in the restoration, repair and establishment of trails. STEP hopes to unify horseback riders and other trail users to build and strengthen relationships between local equestrian communities, the forest service and other land managers for the long-term stewardship of trails.

AQHA funds groups and organizations that have the most impact toward community involvement and trail sustainability. This year’s grant projects include erosion control and stabilization of trailheads, widening trails, repairing slopes and adding tie posts along a trail, building a permanent mounting block, replacement of a boardwalk used for crossing a wet trail along with gates, kiosks and signage featuring signage promoting AQHA and STEP’s support of the projects.
