Legacy Ranch Inc.'s Mister Appolitical, a ’s homebred 4-year-old son of world champion Apollitical Jess, will put his five-race win streak on the line in Sunday's 400-yard, $157,400 Vessels Maturity (G1) at Los Alamitos.
Mister Appolitical made his season debut with a victory in one of three Vessels Maturity trials on June 14, a race which marked the gelding's first start since December 13, when he scored a wire-to-wire, 1 1/2-length win in the 400-yard, $168,700 Southern California Derby (G2).
Mister Appolitical drew Post 6 and will be ridden by Jesus Rios Ayala for trainer Terry Knight.
“The guys at the ranch gave this horse some time,” said Pete Parrella of Legacy Ranch. "It seems to have helped him. After he qualified (to the Southern California Derby), we got some calls from people wanting to buy him. I called Terry and I told him ‘I don’t know how you feel about this, but I’d really like to run this horse as a 4-year-old next year.’ Let’s see if we can run in a few races and try to get him qualified to the Champion of Champions.”
Fastest qualifier Powerful Favorite was scratched from the Vessels Maturity final.
“He is on the vet’s list and needed a work before the final,” trainer Chris O’Dell said. “We could have done it, but I didn’t want to rush the horse. We will take our time. He’s doing great right now and there will be other big races coming up soon.”
