Rick’s journey didn’t start with knives—it began with horses. A passionate horse trainer, Rick later became a farrier, working with horses every day. It was during his time as a farrier that Rick first learned the art of forging, an experience that ignited his passion for knife-making. In the late 1980s, Rick began crafting his first knives in a humble turkey coop with no heat or running water, a setting that would eventually shape his dedication to quality and hard work. 

Rick’s early knives were categorized as "art knives," showcasing his ingenuity in creating unique deployment and locking mechanisms for folders. He worked with any materials he could source, and his creativity didn’t go unnoticed. During visits to his farrier clients, Rick would often show some of the knives he had been working on. His clients, impressed by his craftsmanship, quickly became some of his first customers.

The Firefighter’s Edge

In addition to being a farrier, Rick also served as a firefighter. His time in this role shaped many of his knife designs, with the understanding that, in high-stress emergency situations, failure was not an option. Rick designed knives with names that reflected his firefighting experience—Inferno, Flashpoint, Spark, Flame—and even collaborated with Gerber to create the Hinderer Rescue Knife. Each knife was created with one goal: to be a reliable tool in the most demanding conditions.
