Starting January 15, every Quarter Horse at Los Alamitos Racecourse will earn at least $500 when it starts in any straightaway overnight race.
The $500 figure represents an increase of $200 from the track's previous guaranteed participation purse of $300 per start. The increase will offset rising costs of workers' compensation insurance per start, and it will provide racehorse owners with additional funds to cover costs involved with racing.
The guaranteed participation purses are paid to owners when their horses finish sixth or worse in any straightaway overnight Quarter Horse race. A horse will also earn the guaranteed participation purse if their share of the purse for running fifth is less than $500. Purses for horses finishing fourth or higher are not affected by this change.
Also, one Quarter Horse race for $6,250 (or less) claimers will be selected each day to receive an additional purse bonus of $2,000, which will be awarded to the winning horse. This bonus race will be announced by the Los Alamitos Racing Office; new races could be added to the condition book as a result. Track officials are hopeful that these increases may stimulate activity in the entry box for owners and trainers participating at Los Alamitos.
The increase in the guaranteed participation purse and the bonus race are the most recent adjustments in purse money to benefit owners involved with horse racing at Los Alamitos. Track management, in conjunction with the Pacific Coast Quarter Horse Racing Association, is continuing to explore ways to create more lucrative racing opportunities for horses at all racing levels.
For example, this year Los Alamitos added a dozen new stakes races for Quarter Horse fillies and mares, topped by a $100,000 race. Last year, the track added a Claiming Futurity, which was well received by horsemen, and it created a series for horses competing at the 1,000-yard distance, ending with a night with purses totaling $110,000 for the top 30 horses. This series has been expanded for 2022.
In addition, Los Alamitos management increased the purse of the 2022 Champion of Champions (G1) -- the sport's richest and most prestigious race for older horses -- to $750,000.
