The American Quarter Horse Association is proud to announce the first approved AQHA international stewards since the program’s re-launch. The program’s initiative is to provide formalized, affordable and easily accessible online steward education to support local and regional needs internationally at American Quarter Horse events.

The new international stewards are:

  • Sandra Schmitz of Germany

  • Magdalena Szarszewska of Poland

“I’m so excited that the AQHA international stewards program, which was born out of the AQHA International Committee, allows for more AQHA stewards to be present at international events that use American Quarter Horses,” said Ignacio “Nacho” de Mendiguren, chairman of the international committee. “As the chair of the AQHA International Committee, I feel very proud. This program allows the international stewards base to grow through affordable and accessible online education and serves American Quarter Horse members and horses around the globe.”

The international steward program provides international AQHA Show Managers the option to hire stewards from their region for AQHA-approved shows.

“Congratulations to our first AQHA international stewards, Magdalena Szarszawska and Sandra Schmitz,” said Lori Bucholz, AQHA Animal Welfare Commission chair. “These brilliant women successfully completed the rigorous training and interview process to become official AQHA international stewards. A steward's job includes overseeing the welfare of our American Quarter Horses during shows and events. They also address the safety concerns of the exhibitors and spectators and ensure they are treated fairly.”

Interested applicants can enroll in the Show Steward Education and Testing course on AQH University. This course will provide educational content and informational materials for those interested in becoming an AQHA international steward. Read more about the AQHA international steward approval process.
